DESCRIPTION & WORKSHOP LEADER

Join Kim Young (TOP 2018) and Earthrise Education to travel to the Lusatia Region of eastern Germany using satellite imagery! This region was historically an industrial area focused on lignite coal mining, however with shifts to clean energy, it is experiencing a revitalization as a recreational lake district.  Learn how to use the Earthrise Education tool to spark inquiry, annotate imagery to gather data, and peer review data to investigate and take action with students around environmental issues.

Kim Young is a Social Studies teacher at Weston High School in Weston, Massachusetts. As a proud participant in TOP 6 2018, she enjoyed making new professional connections and the community visit to Kaufbeuren.  Young received the 2014 NCSS James M. Becker Award for Global Understanding and completed the Global Competency Certificate program from Teachers College in 2015.  As a Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching grantee, she traveled to the Palestinian Territories to investigate the use of graphic novels in developing students' global competencies. Through her work as a National Geographic Explorer and Education Fellow, Young has collaborated with data scientist Dan Hammer on the integration of satellite imagery-based inquiry and action projects into interdisciplinary classroom curriculum.
