In 1996 Wenzel Ziersch, graphic artist and painter from Munich, discovered writing as a medium for the creation of his works of art. Over two decades, three different groups of work, titled "antithesis", "registration" and "exercise" were developed. His written images produce subtle, tightly interwoven surfaces that vary depending on the nature of the material they are written upon, as well as the density of his writing and the intensity of the written layers. These fully transcribed texts, mostly from the Old and the New Testament serve the artist as leitmotif and verve for his compositions. Engraved or written using pencil, quill or steel pin on various materials such as paper, plexiglass or wood, these written images come to life within the interplay of negative and positive, and recount the ancient tradition of writing texts, which was custom throughout all world religions.

Wenzel Ziersch was born in 1965 in Munich and currently lives in Bavaria. In 2002 Ziersch exhibited at the Goethe-Institut Toronto. He will be present for the opening reception.
