BOSTON: Director of Administration

The Goethe-Institut has 154 locations in nearly 100 countries and serves as the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany operating worldwide. We promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. The Goethe-Institut connects people globally through a vibrant cultural and educational network. Through our programs, we promote intercultural dialogue and cultural participation, and we strengthen the development of civil society structures.
The Goethe-Institut Boston will become the Regional Institute for North America as of January 1, 2027. We are seeking a dedicated colleague to lead our Administration Department, starting June 1, 2026.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Financial management (financial planning and controlling, payment transactions, forecasting, monthly and annual financial statements, overseeing financial accounting)
- Responsibility for the building, service and contract management
- Oversight of security matters, including building security and emergency response procedures
- Investment planning and procurement, including purchasing of goods and services
- General administrative tasks
- Supporting quality and integrity management (compliance) and contributing to organizational change processes
- Monitoring compliance with budgetary and public procurement regulations
- Personnel administration and leadership of the administration team
- Support change management activities for new processes, policies, and systems
Requirements:
- Proficiency in accounting, budget planning and controlling
- Proven experience in leading teams and managing staff
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365 tools
- High level of flexibility, resilience, social competence, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Strong decision‑making skills and a hands‑on, solution‑oriented approach
- Ability and willingness to work outside of standard business hours when necessary to support operational needs
- Excellent German and English language skills
- A valid work permit for the US is required. Unfortunately, the Goethe-Institut cannot provide any assistance in obtaining a work permit or visa
