A virtual journey to the past. With Thomas Kersten, HafenCity Universität Hamburg. (Symposium, by invitation only)

Bringing the past to life: 3D animations of historically significant buildings and archaeological objects make it possible. Innovative technology allows visitors of modern museums to stroll through virtually reconstructed cities; history gets almost tangible.

Thomas Kersten, professor at the HafenCity University Hamburg, is an expert for this type of 3D models. He has already realized numerous projects around the world and now also helps to bring a piece of Vietnamese history to Germany. A unique exhibition of archaeological objects from Vietnam will be presented in three German museums in the next two years. But some of the historical treasures are not suitable for transportation because of their sensitivity, not to mention architecturally significant buildings such as the Citadel and the Temple of Literature in Hanoi. Due to the 3D models by Kersten and his team, the exhibition visitors in Germany can still experience these objects and historic sites as if there were on side.

Within the scope of the workshop, Thomas Kersten presents his work and gives an insight into the process for which he and his team developed a special software. Kersten demonstrates all the necessary steps, from the very first shot to the 3D modeling to the final visualization of the object.

In the second part of the workshop and on the basis of examples from Vietnam, including the temple city of My Son and the Temple of Literature Hanoi, the participants learn how a virtual tour of a World Cultural Heritage Site can be generated from digital 360° panorama photographs of different camera stations, in which 3D models and additional information can be integrated.

The Historical Museum Hanoi is already working with 3D animation, too, offering visitors a virtual tour through the museum on their website. Ms. Nguyen Thu Hoan and Mr. Hoàng Quốc Việt will present this service.
The workshop is orientated towards a professional audience. Participation is by invitation only.
