Emergent Practice (EP1 & EP2)
Emergent Practice (EP1 & EP2) was a two-part exhibition co-hosted by the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA), University of Johannesburg, and the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. Developed at the invitation of Dr Asma Diakité, the exhibition celebrated innovative and experimental approaches to architectural practice, research, and design.
EP1: Fred Swart - Posters
Opening on 18 June 2024, EP1 highlighted the work of graphic designer Fred Swart, whose visual identity and poster designs have played a significant role in shaping the public programme of the GSA. The exhibition explored the long-standing relationship between Swart and the School through a curated selection of posters produced for the GSA and wider architectural communities. By examining these works, EP1 offered insights into the culture, ambitions, and evolving identity of the School.
The second exhibition, EP2, opened in July 2024 and was co-curated by GSA graduate Chinenye Chukwuka (2023). It featured the work of recent graduates Patricia Bandora, Simphiwe Mlambo, and Titus Shitaatala (2021-2023), whose practices have emerged from postgraduate research and extend beyond conventional architectural boundaries.
The projects presented reflected the ambition and diversity that characterise the Graduate School of Architecture's transformative approach to architectural education. Through research-driven design, community engagement, and interdisciplinary methods, the exhibitors proposed new ways of thinking about architectural practice, teaching, and implementation within contemporary African contexts.
Together, EP1 and EP2 showcased the power of emergent practices to expand the role of architecture and design, highlighting the contributions of both established collaborators and a new generation of practitioners shaping the future of the discipline.
