Fitzcarraldo is a fantasist who seeks to realise his bold dream of an opera in the jungle. Herzog’s epic film became famous above all for the ship being pushed over a mountain, opera arias echoing through the jungle and numerous legends surrounding the film’s production.

In the Latin American jungle, adventurer and opera lover Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, known as Fitzcarraldo, is obsessed with the notion of joining the ranks of the up-and-coming rubber barons and building a large opera house in the humble city of Iquitos. Using the savings of his girlfriend Molly, a brothel owner, he buys a decaying river steamer and an undeveloped rubber plantation. In order to assert his scheme in the initial phase and to avoid the impassable rapids of the Rio Ucayali, Fitzcarraldo has an almost incredible idea: He plans to first travel upstream the Rio Pachitea and then pull the steamer over a mountain to the Rio Ucayali at a point where the two rivers come very close to each other. But this is not the only venture the madman will lead his crew into.

The image of a ship being pushed over a mountain has gained fame even beyond Werner Herzog’s film. The achievements of the entire film crew made FITZCARRALDO an adventure film that is still unparalleled today. No other Herzog project attracted such attention during its making. The foolhardiness of realising the dream of an opera house in the jungle and the ship on the mountain is something the filmmaker undoubtedly has in common with his protagonist, played by Klaus Kinski.
