About the theatre library
The term “new German drama” refers to the generation of authors who have shaped and influenced the style of this genre since the beginning of the 1990s and have established their place in the repertoire of German-speaking theatre and the international stage.
Ranging from the classical drama text to collectively developed stage, novel and film adaptations, documentary theatre and, last but not least, the broad spectrum of children’s and youth theatre, each play reflects a topic that was treated on the stage at the time of the work’s creation and premiere and thus made it an important contemporary document of current socially relevant issues.
The promotion of authors and plays of the new German drama is an essential part of the cultural work of Goethe-Instituts worldwide. In this task the role of theatre translations is of particular importance: by translating the texts into other languages, they can be adapted, performed and made directly communicable in the various cultural contexts.
The digital Theatre Library of the Goethe-Institut has been collecting translations of new German-language drama literature for many years. These translations, which are made possible with the support of the Goethe-Institut, arise in the context of productions, readings and publications in cooperation with local partners and theatres.
The Theatre Library is the central platform for the further dissemination and easy accessibility of the translated plays for those interested in theatre throughout the world, whether for purely personal information, for academic research, or as a stimulus for theatre professionals who wish to perform the plays internationally.
The Theatre Library offers various search functions: by authors, translators, languages, topics and genres. In addition, technical information on the play, author and premiere along with short synopses aid research. The translations can either be downloaded as a PDF file or ordered from the theatre publisher of the original German play.
