Open Call for Visual Art Projects

The Open Call seeks visual art projects that address urgent social and civic issues of local or global relevance. Possible themes include anti-democratic tendencies, the ecological crisis, LGBTQI+/queer perspectives, and mental health. These examples are provided for guidance only—applications on other relevant issues are equally encouraged. Works that have already been exhibited will not be considered.
Conditions of funding
Artists at the beginning of their careers, preferably without previous presentations in established or major galleries.
The call is open to individual artistic and curatorial projects by artists living in Bulgaria or Germany. Collaborative projects between artists from both countries are also welcome. In addition to exhibitions, other formats such as performances, pop-up shows, and similar presentations can be submitted.

- Technical assistance for the gallery setup
- Public relations and communication
- An accompanying program of events
- Relevance and originality of the theme
- Convincing artistic concept
- Quality of the application
- Clear budget planning
- Project description (max. 2 pages) including an artistic statement, a description of the format, and, if applicable, visual references
- Portfolio of the participating artists and, if applicable, the curator
- Budget overview (max. €3,000)
- Timeline with details on implementation and the planned exhibition period

Up to two projects will be selected to be realized in the Goethe-Institut gallery in the calendar year 2026, with the earliest possible start date for a project at the end of February 2026. The supported projects will be chosen by the team of the Cultural Department of the Goethe-Institut Bulgaria. The results will be announced by the end of October 2025.
