Greenhouse gas emissions of industrial societies will most likely destroy the ancient culture of the Marshall Islands within the next three decades; little more than a single generation from now.

Most of the Marshall Islands are less than1.8 metres above sea level. Negative forecasts predict that by the year 2050 the islands will be uninhabitable due to rising sea levels. However, this eminent destruction is not only a local event, but also a universal warning to all people on earth about the truly catastrophic effects of Climate Change and the death warrant we have signed for the human race if we choose to sit back and do nothing to counter the effects of Global Warming. Using the fate of the Marshall Islands as an example, One Word demonstrates the heartbreaking impact of rising sea levels on the people who are least to blame.

One Word is a participatory documentary, developed and filmed with the people of the Marshall Islands over a period of nine months. Directors Viviana and Mark Uriona felt it incredibly important to get to know the people of the Marshal Islands whilst filming the documentary, developing the film project together with them and therefore enabling a kind of empowerment through which the Marshallese people could share the story they needed to tell. This unique approach to mutual cinematographic and narrative exploration has resulted in an exciting, vivid and highly charged documentary that captures the most important topic of our time.

One Word has so far received the Bronze Award at the Handle Climate Change Film Festival (HCCFF), Best Film Jury at the Greenmotion Filmfestival and Special Mention/Best Film at the London International Documentary Film Festival (LIDF20).

One Word will be shown online as part of the 2022 Transitions Film Festival from February 18th to March 13th 2022 - buy your online passes here now!
