Every year on January 22, Franco-German Friendship Day celebrates the unique relationship that has united France and Germany since the signing of the Élysée Treaty in 1963. This historic treaty, concluded by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and President Charles de Gaulle, marked a major turning point: that of reconciliation, dialogue, and lasting cooperation between the two countries after decades of conflict. Today, this day continues to symbolize the importance of cultural, educational, and human exchanges that nourish this friendship and keep it alive.

To celebrate this symbolic day, the Goethe-Institut Montreal and the Alliance Française de Montreal are joining forces to offer a special screening of Claire Burger's filmLangue étrangère. This sensitive and touching film tells the story of two teenage girls —one French, the other German — who meet during a school exchange program. Through their relationship, the film delicately explores the discovery of the other, cultural misunderstandings, the emotions of adolescence, and the richness of Franco-German ties.

Join us in celebrating this friendship that is built on a daily basis, and share an inspiring cinematic moment centered around the themes of encounter and cultural exchange.

The film Foreign Language is about a German-French friendship between two 17-year-old schoolgirls, Fanny and Lena. Fanny from Strasbourg travels to Leipzig as part of a German-French student exchange to visit Lena, who dreams of becoming a political activist. The meeting between the two very different young women is initially marked by language barriers and political tensions. In order to gain the attention of the self-confident Lena, the shy and sensitive Fanny invents a more exciting life for herself. Gradually, a tender friendship develops between the two, but the political and family tensions in Lena's family become increasingly apparent, and the challenges in Fanny's life in Strasbourg cause Fanny to become more and more entangled in her web of little lies...
Foreign Language is a sensitive story about cross-cultural friendship,self-discoveryand the politics of language in a complex, politically charged present.
