Lost in the 90ies tells the story of Germany in the 1990s, from the myth of reunified Berlin through the upheavals of transformation to the diverse, queer and migrant communities at the end of the decade. Taking Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run – the iconic image of the ‘new’ Berlin – as its starting point, the series traces the upheavals of the fall of the Wall and reunification, as well as the political, social and personal upheavals of the post-reunification era. Films such as Christoph Schlingensief’s grotesque Das deutsche Kettensägenmassaker, Andreas Dresen’s Stilles Land and Helke Misselwitz’s Herzsprung bring to light the hopes, uncertainties and search for identity of a country in transition. The series concludes with Kutluğ Ataman’s Lola and Bilidikid, set in Berlin in the late 1990s, and opens up a perspective on issues of migration, queerness and belonging that continue to resonate to this day.
