Lost in Liquid Noise Felix Deufel

As part of Akousma festival

Felix Deufel is a sound artist and sound ecologist whose work focuses on spatial sound, spatial hearing, and the relationship between soundscapes, society, and the environment.

Through field research and expeditions, he explores environmental issues related to ecosystems and human influence in the Anthropocene. His research investigates the soundscapes of environments including the Himalayas, tropical and subtropical rainforests, the Greenland ice sheet, and the Arctic underwater world.

His artistic practice encompasses spatial installations, compositions, performances, and field research, often through collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches combining music, dance, performance, and film.

Founder of Not a Number Studio, which specializes in 3D audio, Deufel also founded the Center for Immersive Media Art, Music and Technology (ZiMMT) in Leipzig in 2020, a space dedicated to the creation, experimentation, and presentation of immersive media art and spatial sound.

LOST IN LIQUID NOISE (2023-2026), 20’
Every day, Greenland loses 600 million metric tons of ice. A reality that’s hard to grasp—we’ve made it audible.

“Lost in Liquid Noise” is a multichannel 3D audio work composed entirely of field recordings made by Felix Deufel during two expeditions to the Arctic (2023–2024): glacier calving, subglacial meltwater, ice tremors, glacial mill systems, underwater recordings beneath frozen seas, drifting icebergs, the presence of whales, and the first spring bloom of plankton.

In the absence of visual cues, sound alone becomes the narrative driving force, blurring spatial references and immersing the listener in a state of deep listening. Climate change thus becomes perceptible, not through explanation, but through a direct spatial, physical, and auditory experience.
