Within the framework of the dance film festival Moving Images, which is organised by Egomio Cultural Centre every year, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus is pleased to present a selection of German films at its event hall this year.

The five films, selected by Elena Christodoulidou (Egomio Cultural Centre) from the German submissions for the festival, deal with everyday themes like the Hamburgerkino, the reality of photographs, the search for the right place, the way from waking to dreaming and the consequences of the war in Vietnam. They give a glimpse into the dance scene in Germany, where many international artists work. In addition to the films from Germany, a film from Belgium and a film from Mexico will be screened.

Breakadventure
Germany | 1:18 Min.
Director: Igor Krasik

Photography is related to the theater. The stage is the frame. The freezing dance pose is similar to photo deduction. The abstraction, paper handling and synthesis of sound and movement is the essence of the piece.

Rhizophora
Germany | 16:14 Min.
Directors: Julia Metzger-Traber, Davide De Lillis
Production: Che.Ne.So
Cast: Hương Đinh,Mai NgôKey, Long NguyễnKey, Long CảnhKey, Đô LêKey, Tuấn Vương, Hơn Vy, Thuận Trần, Lệ Nguyễn

It has been more than forty years since the Vietnam War. Yet, its toxic remnants are not fading. Dancing between waking and dreaming, Rhizophora follows eleven Vietnamese youth, with disabilities caused by Agent Orange, on a whimsical and intimate journey through their day. As the film progresses we are welcomed ever deeper into their richly symbiotic world.

Rhizophora was conceived of and realized in a collaborative process between the featured group of residents and the Berlin based performing arts duo Che.Ne.So. It is both a meditation on the lasting impact of war as well as an ode to the power of life, which can flourish in even the most toxic of circumstances.

La Sabina
Mexico | 4:47 Min.
Directors: Ana Baer, Rocio Luna
Choreographer, Dancer: Rocio Luna
Cinematographer, Editor: Ana Baer
Music: Joaquin Lopez Chaz
Production: Baer productions

La Sabina is an exploration of contemporary surrealism. Loosely based on the tales of Maria Sabina, a female shaman from the depths of Mexico who exposes the connections between the human and the spiritual worlds. This short screendance is inspired by Claude Cahun's constant discourse of multiplicity as well as Remedios Varo's androgynous quality of oneiric vulnerability.

The Quarantine Diaries
Belgium | 8:30 Min.
Director: Oliver Tida Tida & RV
Cast: Oliver Tida Tida & RV

In March 2020 we found ourselves in lock-down alone, one in Paris and the other in Brussels, both calling home a country that is not our, and facing the indefinite suspension of work and social life.

We decided to initiate these quarantine diaries in form of a video-dialogue, to confront and process our emotions and thoughts about the unfolding events. While reacting to each other from distance and creating together without ever meeting, we explore what "communicating" means.
