Kafka and virtual reality.

Virtual Kafka

As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.” Thus begins the most well known novella of the twentieth century, Die Verwandlung or The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.

In the installation “VRwandlung” that uses VR technology, you can wake up as a huge insect in a room faithfully reproduced after the original.

“‘VRwandlung’ transfers Franz Kafka’s work from the pages of a book to virtual reality. The protagonist is no longer Gregor Samsa, but you,” explains Mika Johnson, the director who created the theme room with his young start-up team.

“VRwandlung” is complemented by a virtual tour with Reiner Stach, the author of Kafka’s new standard biography. The expert not only presents Kafka’s work, but also points out the fact that he is actually the spiritual father of virtual reality.

The artist, architect, and researcher David Muoz was invited to design the space for the installation VRwandlung at Oodi. His response is to speculate on Kafka’s relation to class struggle, proposing to read in Metamorphosis the rebellion of the body against capitalist exploitation.
