Game design, different from programming or graphic design, is already an independent and thriving art/science. As scholars Jussi Holopainen and Staffan Björk defined the term, game design is the structure of player interaction with the game system and interaction with other players.

This includes the possibilities, results, and reasons for players to play. By putting these elements of gameplay into practical patterns, designers have access to a common set of concepts that can be used by all developers, allowing game projects to be approached with more standard tools.

Understanding the various game design patterns help the game designers to generate new ideas, systems and ultimately better play, as well as assisting smooth communication inside the design team.

Dr. Jussi Holopainen has for years conducted reviews and research on game design patterns with his colleagues, and published the key literature in this field Patterns in Game Design.

Game Kitchen is honored to have him in the house, walking us through his research. He will give concrete examples of applying the theory to gameplay design, and share his views on the future developments, such as some remarks on the nature of game design in general.
