Big Class, Big Talk! - Activating Speaking in Large DaF Classes

Speaker: Enes Karic
May 22, 2026 | 2:00PM – 4:00PM | Adamson Centre, Room 1
May 23, 2026 | 10:00AM – 12:00PM | Valero Grand Hotel, Amorsolo Hall, 11th Flr

Many German teachers know the situation: large classes, limited time – and still as many students as possible should speak. But how can this be achieved without only a few learners participating while the rest remain silent?

This workshop introduces practical and adaptable strategies that help activate speaking even in large classes. Participants will explore activity formats that encourage interaction, movement, and spontaneous communication while remaining manageable for teachers. In addition to trying out selected activities, the workshop invites participants to reflect on their own teaching contexts and exchange ideas for engaging large groups in meaningful communication.

Action-Oriented Teaching in Large DaF Classes: Practical Activities for Large Groups (Online and Face-to-Face)

Speaker: Lyza Rendon
May 22, 2026 | 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Adamson Centre, Room 2
May 23, 2026 | 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Adamson Centre, Room 1

Teaching large groups can be challenging, especially when the goal is to create meaningful, communicative learning opportunities for all learners. This workshop explores practical strategies for designing action-oriented activities that work effectively in large DaF classes without requiring the teacher to monitor or check every student individually.

Participants will learn how to structure activities that allow learners to work autonomously through peer interaction, self-checking mechanisms, and digital support. The workshop will demonstrate how a single activity can serve multiple pedagogical purposes—for example, beginning as focused grammar practice and then evolving into a communicative, action-oriented task.

In addition, participants will be introduced to several digital tools that facilitate interactive learning. These tools can be used both in online teaching environments and in face-to-face classrooms, making them highly adaptable to different teaching contexts.

Through practical examples and discussion, the workshop aims to provide teachers with efficient, flexible, and scalable activity designs that promote active language use even in large classes.

Acting – Speaking – Filming

Speaker: Markus Maleyka
May 22, 2026| 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Adamson Centre, Room 6

In this creative workshop, participants slip into fictional roles and bring dialogues from films, musicals, and short stories to life. Working in groups, they are given a script and a camera and film selected scenes independently. The resulting material is edited into a short film, which is then watched and discussed in class.

The workshop demonstrates in a practical way how learners can develop longer dialogues through active, authentic speaking, thereby strengthening their language skills in the long term.

Clear Instructions in the DaF Classroom – Fewer Misunderstandings, More Learning Time

Speakers: Nina Agcaoili, Kim Wigand, Jaime Domingo
May 23, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Adamson Centre, Room 1

Unclear instructions often waste time, create uncertainty, and prevent learners from demonstrating their full potential. In school contexts with heterogeneous groups of learners, it is especially important that tasks are formulated clearly, transparently, and at an appropriate language level.

This practice-oriented workshop demonstrates, through concrete classroom examples, how instructions can be designed to guide learning processes clearly, promote cognitive engagement, and make more efficient use of classroom time. Participants will analyze common classroom problem cases, revise existing task instructions, and develop their own competence-oriented assignments for different CEFR levels (A1–B1).

The workshop focuses on practical strategies that teachers can apply directly in their classrooms.

Movement in the Classroom: Practical Activities and Strategies for Different Group Sizes

Speaker: Jamila Briones

May 23, 2026 | 2:00 PM –4:00 PM | Adamson Centre, Room 2

How can movement be meaningfully integrated into the classroom? How can physical activity help activate and motivate learners?

Movement-based learning is becoming increasingly important in language teaching, as it can promote attention, participation, and long-term learning. In this workshop, we will explore different concepts and practical examples of movement-based learning activities that can be easily integrated into the classroom. Participants will learn concrete activities and begin to consider how they can implement them creatively and effectively in their own classes and adapt them to different group sizes.

Many Learners, Many Mistakes, Many Opportunities: Error Correction in Large DaF Classes

Speaker: Nedim Akeljic
May 23, 2026 | 10:00 AM –12:00 PM | Adamson Centre, Room 6
May 23, 2026 | 2:00 PM –4:00 PM | Valero Grand Hotel, Amorsolo Hall, 11th Flr

Mistakes are a natural part of language learning—but how can they be addressed effectively, especially in large classes? Many German teachers work with groups where providing individual feedback is challenging, raising the question of how correction can remain supportive, motivating, and time-efficient.

This workshop invites participants to rethink the role of mistakes in the DaF classroom and to explore different approaches to error correction in large groups. Participants will engage with practical strategies, classroom ideas, and shared experiences that can help turn errors into meaningful learning opportunities. The aim is to discover adaptable approaches that teachers can flexibly apply in their own teaching contexts.

Writing is more than just putting words on paper—it is a key to organizing thoughts, sharing ideas, and reflecting on language learning processes. In German lessons, writing not only strengthens grammar and vocabulary, but also promotes creative thinking, expressiveness, and self-confidence. In this workshop, you will learn how to specifically support your students' writing skills. After an introduction to the theoretical basics, you will try out practical tasks and exercises and finally develop your own teaching ideas that you can implement directly in your classroom.
