Weaving Futures – Artist Residency
Artist Residency | Weaving Futures: A Cross-Cultural Journey in Sustainable Design by EUNIC Cluster Thailand
-
Bangkok: Galleries Nights (Alliance Française Bangkok) | Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai Design Week 2026, Bangkok | Chiang Mai
The project fosters dialogue between young designers from Europe and Thailand, placing ecological responsibility, inclusion and shared creativity at its centre.
As part of the project, students from Thailand and Europe come together for an intensive hands-on experience in remote regions of Thailand, where traditional crafts and sustainable practices inspire new ideas. Each Thai-European student pair then completes a residency, guided by professional mentors from both continents, to translate local knowledge into innovative prototypes that reflect environmental awareness and cultural exchange. The results will be presented at major public events, including the "Galleries Nights" (Alliance Française Bangkok) and Chiang Mai Design Week 2026.
Building on "Creatives for Climate Action – Thailand" (CCAT), and inspired by and in partnership with the "Design Asia" programme of NHL Stenden University (Netherlands), "Weaving Futures" turns dialogue into design, translating shared values into tangible outcomes and lasting partnerships between students, institutions and communities.
Participant from Germany
Stella Nowacki
Stella Nowacki was selected as the German participant. She is a third-semester textile design student at HAW Hamburg. Following her training as a bespoke tailor, she gained experience in the film, theatre and costume industries before turning her attention to experimental textile design. In her work, she combines traditional craft techniques with a playful, intuitive approach and focuses on sustainable materials, upcycling and the transformation of everyday objects and furniture. She is particularly interested in textile installations, interdisciplinary connections between art, craft and nature, and cultural exchange as a source of inspiration for contemporary design. All her works are created from recycled, reused or natural materials. Through the project in Thailand, she hopes to integrate nature, poetry and new materials into her work and to learn from the history and perspectives of a different culture.
