SCHULWÄRTS!
Overview
SCHULWÄRTS! facilitates and promotes international teaching internships at schools supported by the Goethe-Institut, thereby strengthening the internationalization of teacher education. The program is open to teacher education students and prospective teachers of all school types and subjects, who receive individual support before, during, and after their internship. During the multi-week stays, the scholarship holders support local teachers, take part in classroom teaching, and implement their own projects.
Participation in the SCHULWÄRTS! project involves your school hosting a trainee or
newly-qualified teacher from Germany for a placement lasting from eight to sixteen
weeks. During their time at the school, the SCHULWÄRTS! scholarship holders perform
activities that include assisting in the classroom (with GFL) in the capacity of observation or co-teaching, as well as taking responsibility for planning themselves. At the same time they are communicating an up-to-date image of Germany to both German learners and local teachers, which increases interest in Germany and the German language. In addition, the scholarship holders can also support or deliver extra-curricular projects/events by arrangement with the school, on a variety of themes including sustainability, IT, music, theatre or sports.
By promoting international school placements, SCHULWÄRTS! is creating a win-win situation from which both partner schools and scholarship holders profit in equal measure. (Former) students in all subject combinations and school types can strengthen their intercultural skills, accumulate international teaching experience and become familiar with the day-to-day school routine in another country. A change of perspective during the placement is character-building for teachers and makes them more sensitive to the needs of increasingly heterogeneous classes and students who are not native speakers of German. If they cooperate and discuss teaching methods and learning themes, it creates an atmosphere of peer collaboration and professional development, which constitutes added value for both parties.
Program Structure and Support
The SCHULWÄRTS! scholarship holders receive comprehensive support within the
context of the project. The SCHULWÄRTS! placement includes classroom-based seminars in Munich, each lasting three days, to prepare and follow up. Scholarship holders are allocated points of contact in their placement school and at the Goethe-Institut, both in the placement country and at head office. The mentoring package is rounded off by the online educational support service, who also perform functions such as focusing on teaching methods in (foreign language) classes. During the placement, scholarship holders are financially supported with a grant.
