Soccer brings together people from diverse backgrounds – while also reflecting social challenges. This workshop focuses on the role of players with migration backgrounds in both professional and amateur soccer, showing how the sport serves as a powerful tool for integration and participation.
We will highlight inspiring club initiatives against racism and right-wing extremism and discuss how soccer supports “welcome culture” projects for refugees. Excerpts from the documentary Schwarze Adler (“Black Eagles”) provide insights into the history and present experiences of Black soccer players in Germany and invite critical reflection.
Teachers will receive concrete materials and lesson ideas to address themes of diversity, discrimination, and social engagement in a sensitive and engaging way in the German as a Foreign Language classroom – with an intercultural focus and connections to the 2026 World Cup.

This workshop is eligible to receive professional development hours or graduate-level credits through our partner Idioma Education & Consulting. Visit goethe.de/usa/idioma for more information.
