Death in Venice (1971) is a haunting adaptation of Thomas Mann's classic novel about an artist, paralysed by ennui and repressed emotion, who, during a visit to Venice, discovers in the homoerotic affection for a young man the last remnant of beauty and emotion. Lost in this “impossible love”, he loses not only his dignity, but also finds his death.
