Der Pfad (The Path)
Dir. Tobias Wiemann
Germany/Spain, 2022
99 minutes
With Julius Weckauf, Nonna Cardoner, Volker Bruch, Anna Maria Mühe
Please join the Goethe-Institut Chicago, DANK Haus German American Cultural Center, and the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center for a screening of 2022 children’s film Der Pfad (The Path). Pursued by the Nazis for his critical articles, German journalist Ludwig and his 12-year-old son, Rolf, are stranded in Marseilles. Their goal is to travel to New York and reunite with Rolf’s mother. The only way to freedom is a steep path leading through the Pyrenees to Spain, and Núria, a Catalan girl, is tasked with guiding them. When Ludwig gets caught en route, Rolf, Núria, and Adi, Rolf’s dog, are on their own. The two children must stick together and rely on each other—and the generosity of others—to make it through. Inspired by Lisa Fittko’s memoir 'Escape through the Pyrenees,' the film blends a light touch and suspense to show a young audience what it means when children must face war and persecution on their own.
The Path won the 2022 German Film Award for Best Children’s Film, as well as Best Children’s Film at BUFF Malmö and Best Picture at the Reel2Real International Film Festival for Youth in Vancouver.
The film is recommended for ages 8 and up, and the trailer can be viewed here.
This event will take place in the DANK Haus's ground floor Treffpunkt space. From 12:00pm – 12:30pm, all are invited for a light pizza lunch. The screening will run from 12:30pm – 2:00pm.
This event is free and open to the public, and although advanced registration is not required, please RSVP via Eventbrite to help us plan accordingly.
