Goethe-Institut New York

Toward a Media History of Modern and Contemporary Art

The second event accompanying the series Exhibition as Image, a group show at NYU gallery 80WSE, curator and writer Saim Demircan will be introducing Mahan Moalemi, Curatorial Fellow at Harvard University, who will be speaking on the topic of Documentation, Speculation, and Pattern Recognition in Contemporary Art, followed by a reception at the Goethe-Institut New York.
Register Exhibition as Image focuses on the role exhibition documentation plays within artistic practice, exhibition making, and criticism. With the advent of increased public visibility, the homogenization of documentation has typically flattened exhibitions into images. As such, the group show at 80WSE re-frames how art is seen through images by artists who have documented exhibitions or who take the documentation of art as a basis for their own work by creating counterpoints to processes of standardization.

Mahan Moalemi is a writer and curator from Tehran, Iran. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Film and Visual Studies at Harvard University, where he is also the 2021-2022 Graduate Curatorial Fellow at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. He was a 2020 recipient of Kunstverein München's Writers Residency.

In recent work, Moalemi has explored the movement of installation shots and exhibition views across various platforms, highlighting how the contemporary art world coincides with a global experience economy that relies on the generation and circulation of visual information as an abstract currency. Looking into encounters between global visual cultures and critical future studies, his research probes the pseudo-discipline of Comparative Futurism.

He is also the co-editor of Ethnofuturisms (Merve Verlag, 2018) and his writing has appeared in Art-Agenda, Cabinet, Domus, Frieze, Spike Art Magazine, as well as journals, exhibition catalogues, and edited volumes published in and outside Iran.
