Welcome to the 2021 DC Shorts International Film Festival, our 18th edition! Enjoy a 10-day hybrid film festival kicking off on Thursday Sept. 9, with 95 outstanding short films from 26 countries online presented in 18 *Showcases, and running through Sunday Sept 19. We’re excited to return with several live screenings in partnership with JXJ, plus two live event screenings at Goethe-Institut. Please note - all live events will adhere to strict CDC and local DC COVID guidelines as outlined below. Although the 2021 Festival events are not all live as we would have preferred, one thing that has not changed over the past year is the quality of the showcases and short films we'll be screening.
*What is a Showcase? A newbie to shorts festivals recently asked our Director of Programming, Joe Bilancio, "What is a showcase?" So we thought it was worthwhile to share his response for any and all who may wonder. “The SHOWCASE is a grouping of short films programmed together to express and highlight the depth and breadth of short filmmaking. We program a variety of film styles, genres and themes in each Showcase to allow the viewer an experience emphasizing all that the craft of filmmaking has to offer. Each Showcase includes a mix of US Narrative Shorts, International (Foreign Language) Shorts, Animated Shorts, Documentary Shorts, and so on. We call it “Cinematic Dim Sum” allowing you to experience the many “flavors” that short films have to offer. We also attempt to bring you to emotional highs with intense or thought provoking films, make you ROTFL with comedy shorts, educate and inform with documentaries, providing insight into something you knew nothing about, or adding new perspectives. Not every showcase fits the above description, we do our best to ensure that they do…even if they don’t, each Showcase is sure to entertain!"
