BEAUTY AND DECAY

Annekatrin Hendel’s gentle portrait introduces the soft side of a man that the world knows as Europe’s toughest bouncer. Sven Marquardt does not only guard the door of the infamous techno club Berghain, he’s also a world-class artist. He started his career working as a trained photographer in East Berlin, capturing the distinctive subcultural scene of the city before the fall of the Berlin Wall: erotic, nonchalant, dirty, and existential, powerfully expressive black and white photographs. His works are shot in broad daylight, but radiate nightlife, ecstasy, excess, and darkness. Annekatrin Hendel sits down with the photographer Sven Marquardt and two of his old friends from past punk rock times: Robert Paris und Dominique Hollenstein (Dome). The trio’s light shined brighter than the rest of the vibrant East Berlin bohemia of the 80s.
BEAUTY & DECAY tells the story of three friends whose individual lives are defined by their artistic view of the world, by radicalism, and open-mindedness. It is also a story about the longing for individualism and unconventionality, rebellion, fashion, getting older, love, and friendship in two different ideologies. And, last but not least, it is a Berlin film. Robert Paris’ spectacular photographs of East Berlin in the 80s illustrate the beauty of deserted streets, boarded doors, shotup façades. His works display the unique nature of these lost places. But Sven Marquardt, Dome, and Robert Paris are still here. And so is this film.

© Cole-Westermann.jpg © Sven Marquardt: Born in East Berlin in 1962, Marquardt was a formative part of the emerging Punk, New Wave and artists' scenes of Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg from the mid 1980s. When the Berlin Wall came down, he took a time-out from photography and immersed himself in Berlin's newly developing club scene, eventually making a name for himself as the doorman of the famed nightclub, Berghain. Inspired by the cultural atmosphere of Berlin, Sven returned to photography in the late 1990s with his exhibitions traveling the world. His work has been shown in Berlin, Belgrade, Sydney and New York City, at the invitation of the German Goethe Institut, for magazines including Interview, Sang Bleu, and L'Uomo Vogue, as well as for fashion labels such as Hugo BOSS, Levi’s, ITEM m6, Baldessarini, Liebeskind and most recently, G-Star. Marquardt is represented by and his works are shown courtesy of Galerie Deschler Berlin. marquardt-photography.com
