The Science Film Festival is back again. The eight edition of this international program with films and fun and learning will take place in Hanoi from 22th October - 23th December 2018.

The program consists of 12 short films, numerous side programs with experiments for teachers and students. It will be hosted in two big cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This year’s major topic is food revolution. The topic reflects the importance of food consumption and its effects on the environment.

The science film festival is an international program. It has been organized by the Goethe-Institute, the German Cultural Center since 2005. It has been introduced to Vietnam since 2010. The festival is an international activity and is held in 24 countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East and Africa. This year’s program is comprised of 12 films from four countries: Indonesia, Germany, USA and England. They were selected from 278 film submissions from international filmmakers, studios and television programs.

In Vietnam the Goethe Institute takes the program to schools of secondary education in cooperation with THD education Solutions Co and Director of Research Center for Education Information and Forecast (EIFC), Viet Nam Institute for Education Sciences (VNIES).

The 8th Science Film Festival will set a particular focus on teenagers. This decision has been made with respect to the plans of the Director of Research Center for Education Information and Forecast (EIFC), Viet Nam Institute for Education Sciences (VNIES) to promote STEM in Vietnam. The Science Film Festival and the side programs support the interest and capacities of young people in nature and technology, in school subjects such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The Science Film Festival offers films. The presentation of films is combined with interactive programs for students. The teachers of secondary schools are involved and make use of the program as a source of inspiration for their daily work.

This year, the festival has evolved around the topic “Food Revolution”. The term refers to one of the biggest challenges for our environment: the industrialization of agriculture. The world population increases and so does our demand for food. The production of nutritional goods is based on genetic engineering and other ways to increase the productivity of plants and soil. We are facing environmental damage through agricultural emissions (e.g. methanol, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide), mass-consumption/pollution through farming, as well as the progressive destruction of natural goods and wildlife for the benefit of cultivation.

The organization of the festivals involves going to schools and offering hand-on-activities to students and model lessons for teachers. For the organization, 125 volunteers have been prepared and trained. The festival expects to reach 10.000 participants. More important than figures is the model character of combining entertainment and learning for students of secondary schools.

The Science Film Festival in Vietnam starts on October 22nd and ends on December 23rd, 2018. The opening ceremony is on October 24th, 2018 at 8.30 am in Thuc Nghiem secondary school, there will be a lot of activities for children and teenagers.

A special program for students and teachers will be the science film activity days at the Goethe-Institute on November 11th and 18th . A digital learning platform will be offered, to create an international discourse on how to integrate STEM into educational structures. Addressing the students, we will screen films and engage everybody both playfully and experimentally with environmental protection through a conscious food consumption.
