Hungarian secondary school have a long tradition of bilingual teaching. Every year, about 1,000 students take a “German-language Abitur” (Germany’s higher education entrance qualification), which generally involves taking a written examination in German in two subjects. This article studies the effectiveness – in terms of both content and language teaching – of bilingual classes in Hungary.
