Jail Time Records presents an immersive live performance that projects the public into one of Africa’s most notorious prisons. Jail Time uses artistic expression to reimagine the stigma
around incarceration and provide a creative outlet for inmates and a pathway to reinsertion. By combining music, dance, spoken word poetry, theater, and visual effects of the prison’s
interior, the performance confronts the public with the lived experiences of the formerly incarcerated artists and forces a reckoning with the conditions of incarceration.
An original concept by Jail Time Records, with the creative direction of Steve Happi and Dione Roach in collaboration with choreographers Mirjam Gurtner and Melissa Kiefer. The
performance is split into three acts, acted out by formerly incarcerated artists from Jail Time Records non-profit label, and will take viewers through stories of crime, incarceration and
redemption. The project will be conceptualized during a residency in Douala and will premiere at the Goethe-Institut in Yaoundé, before traveling to France in collaboration with
PAM and in Germany with Carhartt Wip.
