Do you sometimes see patterns where there are none? Do you find information that more often confirms your opinion rather than contradict it? Don’t worry, we all fall for biases – whether cognitive or statistical. So it would be no surprise if AI programmed by people might misinterpret data. Is it possible to and how do we create objective algorithms that eliminate human bias? Could AI be a solution to (un)conscious discrimination or does it have the potential to deepen the problem?

On 2nd September the participants in the EthicAI=LABS project will explore these and more issues together with two experts from Serbia and Romania.

Vladan Joler (SRB) is an academic, researcher and artist whose work blends data investigations, counter-cartography, investigative journalism, writing, data visualisation, critical design and numerous other disciplines. He explores and visualises different technical and social aspects of algorithmic transparency, digital labour exploitation, invisible infrastructures and many other contemporary phenomena in the intersection between technology and society.

He has curated and organized numerous events and gatherings of Internet activists, artists and investigators, including SHARE events in Belgrade and Beirut. His artistic pre-history is rooted in media activism and game hacking. Aside from his permanent professorship position, i.e. tenure, at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, where he teaches at the New Media Department, he has given lectures at numerous educational and art institutions, including the University of Oxford, Museo Reina Sofía, CCCB, the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, HfG-Karlsruhe, etc.

Mihaela Constantinescu (RO) Principal Investigator of the national research grant on "Collective moral responsibility: from organizations to artificial systems. A re-evaluation of the Aristotelian framework" (CoMoRe), carried within the University of Bucharest, where she focuses on the normative interplay between the concepts of collective moral responsibility and moral agency in relation to individuals, organizations and AI. She received her PhD in moral philosophy from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Bucharest, where she currently holds a position as an associate lecturer. Her research interests include virtue ethics, business ethics and philosophy of technology, with academic papers published in journals such as Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility and Journal of Business Ethics. She is co-author of the book “Institutionalizing ethics: mechanisms and instruments” (in Romanian).

The trio that focuses on the topic of Bias: Sinem Görücü (R), Ajla Kulaglić (BH) and Nasir Muftić (BH) will present their collaborative work and research. All workshop participants – fellows and experts – will use their pool expertise to look for new perspectives on the posed problems.

While the workshop is closed for the project participants, the presentations by the guest experts and the following Q&A will be recorded and posted on the EthicAI=LABS project page.
