What was life like for a wealthy German merchant family in the 19th century? What social values shaped their lives, and how did traditions, political conditions, and personal life plans change over the generations? In our book club, we’ll read and discuss Thomas Mann’s famous novel "The Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family" together. Through the story of a merchant family in Lübeck, we’ll explore the world of the German middle class in the 19th century. In doing so, we’ll not only engage with the literature but also examine the society, politics, architecture, and everyday culture of the time. Since "Buddenbrooks" is a lengthy novel, we’ll be studying the work over the course of several semesters. New participants are warmly welcome! We’ll read the book together—you don’t need to have read anything in advance for the first session on December 2. This club meets every two weeks.
