Soccer is the most popular sport in Germany and has a rich history of over 150 years. The German Football Association has over eight million members and is thus considered the largest single-sport association in the world. Around 24,000 clubs are organized under its umbrella, most of which play in the lower amateur leagues. Volunteers shape the organizational structures. They are actively involved in large numbers in clubs and associations and take on a wide variety of roles and responsibilities there. The women’s and men’s Bundesliga leagues are among the best in Europe. Numerous international stars play for the top clubs, and soccer “Made in Germany” is also in high demand abroad. Elite development begins as early as childhood and adolescence, and the national team is the dream for many young talents.

The German Football Museum, based in the city of Dortmund, and the Goethe-Institutes in the USA, Canada, and Mexico are presenting a photo exhibition to commemorate the Football World Championship 2026 that explores the various facets of soccer: its successes, the fascination it holds for millions of fans, as well as its history and social significance.

This exhibition offers visitors a wide range of perspectives on German soccer culture - from historic achievements and influential figures to current trends in men’s and women’s soccer. Sixteen thematic posters paint a multifaceted picture of Germany as a soccer nation, draw international connections, and encourage visitors to explore the unifying power of this sport.

From June 25 to July 19, 2026, the exhibition can be visited during the Goethe-Institut Toronto’s opening hours.
