My name is happy

Nick Read, Ayse Toprak | UK | 2022 | 82 min. | Turkish with English subtitles

Mutlu Kaya is just 19 when she comes very close to her big dream of becoming a singer. She is about to reach the final of the TV show "Turkey's Got Talent". The media celebrates the young woman, whose name means “happy” in Turkish. But then the young Kurdish woman is shot by a man whose marriage proposal she rejected. She barely survives the attempted femicide. After weeks in a coma, she takes her first cautious steps back into life, supported by her beloved sister Dilek. But five years later, a phone call hits Mutlu harder than anything before: her sister Dilek has been murdered by her fiancé. Mutlu now fights not only for her own recovery, but for justice for her sister and against the normalization of violence against women. She finally wants to sing again for Dilek.

Warning: This film is about psychological, physical and sexualized violence against women. These depictions can trigger negative feelings and flashbacks. Please consider whether you want to confront yourself with this content.
