Into the Beat - Dein Herz tanzt by director Stefan Westerwelle showcases ballet dancer Katya, who discovers the unknown world of hip-hop dancing. In various dance battles, she learns a lot about herself and about Marlon, an enthusiastic hip-hop performer. Unfortunately, her new passion causes conflicts, including her relationship with her father, as ballet has a long tradition in her family.
At first, the plot unfolds like a classic dance film. Two teenagers live in different worlds and a conflict with their parents soon arises. Unlike others, however, this youth film offers more than just two rival dance groups. It is characterized by its authentic and realistic relationships, especially between the two main characters Katya and Marlon and the emotional father-daughter relationship. The contrast between two different worlds is achieved by the portrayal of two very different individuals, their costumes, and the particularly striking dance interpretation of the two dance styles, hip hop and ballet.
In the course of the film, it becomes clear how well the influences from both worlds can complement each other.
102 min., recommended for ages 11 and up, German with Engl. subtitles
