A walk through the city's public spaces around access, use, and equality with Shawn Micallef
Commissioned & presented by the Goethe-Institut Toronto
Free Registration-Limited Space!
During ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art 2021, this walk & talk will meander through public and semi-public spaces of the lower downtown core –for example revealing the public-private nature of the PATH–, slipping under the Gardiner Expressway and its outdoor homeless shelters, and along the waterfront to look at the residential & commercial transformation not unlike that on Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, discussing rent and affordability, human vs. property rights, and where and how we invest public money. The walk will end at the foot of Yonge Street, reflecting on Toronto and Berlin variations of city building, city life, public art and urban memory.
Shawn Micallef is the author of Stroll: Psychogeographic Walking Tours of Toronto, Full Frontal TO, and The Trouble With Brunch: Work, Class and the Pursuit of Leisure. He’s a weekly columnist at the Toronto Star, a senior editor and co-owner of Spacing and teaches at the University of Toronto. His most recent book, Frontier City: Toronto on the Verge of Greatness, was published in 2017 and he is currently working on a book about tourism.
He realized a downtown Toronto walk for the Goethe-Institut Toronto in 2019 around #Bauhaus100.
