In 2025, audiences in Addis Ababa will have the opportunity to experience another work by Bertolt Brecht in Amharic "The Caucasian Chalk Circle". Director Manyazewal Endeshaw is working on the production together with dramaturge and Brecht expert
Dr. Laura Olivi, who was already in Addis Ababa in December 2024 to prepare for the production.
"Yemechereshaw Fird - የመጨረሻው ፍርድ" is the Amharic title for the play. Why The Caucasian Chalk Circle in Ethiopia? Manyazewal gives the following reason for staging the play now.
During my master's degree in Germany, I had the opportunity to see a performance of Bertolt Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle." I remember this now and believe that it has a direct relevance to our current situation.
Ethnic conflicts are one of the greatest threats to international peace and security. The destabilization of provinces, states and, in some cases, entire regions is a common consequence of ethnic violence. Ethnic conflicts are often accompanied by serious human rights violations such as genocide and crimes against humanity, as well as economic decline, state collapse, environmental problems and refugee flows.
Ethnic conflict in Ethiopia today is intensifying day by day and threatens to destabilize the entire country. As a citizen and artist, I feel responsible for doing something about it and making a positive contribution to peace and understanding among my people.
