Manyazewal's Mother Courage
"Emiye Biretewa - እምዬ ብረቷ"
After almost 45 years, Bertolt Brecht's play "Mother Courage" returned to Ethiopia in a different adaptation, translated and directed by Manyazewal Endeshaw, and has been on the programme at the same theatre (Ethiopian National Theatre) since 2019.
In 2017, Manyazewal was invited by the Goethe-Institut to take part in the 18th International Translators Workshop in Mülheim, where the idea of translating the play "Mother Courage" into Amharic was born.
This time, the play is titled "Emiye Biretewa - እምዬ ብረቷ". Manyazewal says of his initiative to adapt the play.
As a former theatre studies student at Humboldt University, I always wanted to do a Brecht play, but the right situation never arose. But now the chaotic situation in my country calls for a play that shows the dangers of war and the fact that no one benefits from it.
My intention is to create a kind of adaptation that is appropriate to the current situation in our country, so that it conveys the idea directly to our audience. And to get government representatives and leaders of various political groups to pave the way for a rational consideration and reasonable discussion of the explosive situation.
The play, which has attracted large audiences since its premiere in 2019, is performed every Sunday at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the theatre box office before the performance for 200 birr per person. Ethiopian National Theater.
