The German Olympics (IDO) is the biggest competition for the German language. Every two years over 100 students from all around the world meet to compete in their most beloved foreign language.
We are happy to welcome the German Olympics for schools worldwide to the United Kingdom in 2020 for the third time.
After being hosted in Berlin (2016) and Freiburg (2018), the IDO 2020 will be held in an innovative virtual format for the first time featuring the city of Dresden as its virtual host.
Applications for the United Kingdom are now closed.
The national preliminary decision took place on 24 April 2020 in a digital format. Applicants had to complete two tasks:
1st task: Please write a paragraph of 100 words on the following question:
Was gefällt dir an den deutschsprachigen Ländern am besten?
2nd task: Please record a video or audio file (max. 1:30 minutes) on
the following question: Was ist typisch deutsch?
The winners of the national qualifying rounds were Hannah Greenland (17) and Sophia Wang (16). Congratulations to them both!
They will take part in the finals online, in which they’ll be competing against the world's best young German learners in one of the three different levels of language proficiency. The IDO is not just about language skills: it’s also about intercultural and interpersonal skills and your ability to work in an international team.
