Europe’s Kitchen
What happens to ideas of Europe, togetherness and sharing when considered from the vantage point of the kitchen? Between August and December 2020, eleven artists will reach out across borders to engage with citizens in eleven different European cities. They will cook up beautiful ways of meeting, touching, tasting, exchanging and understanding – while maintaining physical distance as necessary.

Perhaps nothing shows a fingerprint for Europe's cultural diversity as much as its wealth of dishes, ways to eat and last but not least - kitchens. The Europe's Kitchen project by the Goethe-Institut shows that openness towards new people and stories, new flavors and ideas can enrich us.
Tasting Europe
Jeannette Ehler’s work deals with the politics of the gaze, power relations, resistance and colonialism’s imprint at present time. Her video installations are the basis for a menu created by the
Soul Food Sisters, a unique, Glaswegian collective of female cooks from five different continents passionate about food and communication
Inspired by their own engagement with
Jeannette Ehlers’ work and its relation to their own lives, the
Soul Food Sisters will prepare a special menu to be served at their Café in Glasgows East End from
7th - 9th of October 2020 and then again from the
14th - 16th of October 2020.

Cooking Europe
Even without a shared physical space, a community can be connected by a culinary experience. As we unfortunately are not able to organize a local workshop with the
Soul Food Sisters and
Deveron Projects in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, their recipes and ideas will be sent out to local residents. This way, the local community can recreate the Soul Food Sisters’ menu and share in the experience.
The acknowledgement of each other’s presence that the act of sitting down at a table together represents is deeply impacted by the current crisis. Far from diminishing the role of the shared meal, this adaptation is an affirmation of togetherness during these difficult times - flexibility and spontaneity have long been core traits of the kitchen as an archetype after all.
Talking Europe
Each meal is also an invitation for exchange and discussion. How do people in Glasgow relate to Europe? We invite all participants to answer on postcards created for Europe’s Kitchen. On the
18th of October at 2 pm, four British experts will discuss
Jeannette Ehlers’ video installations, the collected answers and questions of togetherness from their very own perspectives.
Priya Basil, the curator of the project will host this special discussion featuring
Jeannette Ehlers, A.L. Kennedy, Paul Gilroy, Karen Alexander, Lizzie Collingham and a member of the Soul Food Sisters.
Which ideas about Europe, art, food, togetherness and sharing will this meeting spark? Everyone is welcome to join!
