The Mechanisms of Alt-Right Digital Propaganda in Germany

All over Europe extreme right-wing movements are gaining attention and political power. An important battleground for the extreme right is the internet. These movements are not only spreading hate and violence, they are also attempting to use pop culture and social media to create their own “influencers”. Is this surprising? This presentation concludes: not at all. New right-wing movements are using theoretical concepts from Carl Schmitt, Martin Heidegger and even from the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci. Regarding the far-right’s perception of these theories, it is becoming quite clear that the far-right’s tactics for gaining hegemony in discourses in the internet and, ultimately, in Europe’s parliaments are interlinked. This talk aims to reveal how alt-right movements are using Carl Schmitt to gain attention on Instagram.
