This drama is based on the novel of the same name by Erich Kästner. In the midst of the Weimar Republic, Jakob Fabian (Tom Schilling) and his best student friend Labude (Albrecht Schuch) live in Berlin. Jakob works in a cigarette factory by day and roams the bars, art studios and brothels by night. He leads the life of a lost young man. He finally finds stability with the young Cornelia (Saskia Rosendahl), who becomes ray of hope in his life.
But the world economic crisis of the 1930s soon hits Berlin hard. In one fell swoop, Fabian loses his job, his relationship, and his best friend.
