Kawin in Germany

Accompany 16-year-old Kawin on his stay in Germany with your students. The bilingual publication of the Goethe-Institut offers exercises for everyday life and video animations to promote listening comprehension.

Who is Kawin?

Kawin is a 16-year-old Thai boy and the main character of the publication Kawin in Germany. The student flies to Germany for a youth exchange program and meets the Jäger family in Freiburg. In ten exciting and entertaining chapters, he gets to know the country and its people, makes friends, experiences cultural differences and similarities, and discovers German everyday life anew every day.

With this book, the Goethe-Institut Thailand would like to give all learners of German and those interested in Germany the opportunity to gain an insight into the German language and culture. The special feature of this book is that it is bilingual and therefore also suitable for learners of German from language level A1. Each of the ten chapters contains tasks and exercises. QR codes also provide access to short video animations and audio examples, which are a great way to practice listening comprehension and speaking German.

About the book

In Thailand, there are around 8,000 students who study German as a major or minor subject at their school. Yet only a few of them have been to Germany or are friends with Germans who could tell them something about everyday life in Germany. Ten hours by plane, or more than 9,000 kilometers, is a long distance that cannot be bridged easily. Many students therefore only know Germany from lessons or the media and would still like to know more about the country between the North Sea/Baltic Sea and the Alps. What is everyday life in Germany like? What is different from Thailand? What is similar? What do you do at school, in your free time or what can you find in a German supermarket? Kawin in Germany is a book for all those students in Thailand who are learning German, want to learn German or are just interested in Germany and its people.

How can I purchase a copy?

We offer the material free of charge to German teachers in Thailand. If you are interested, please contact us by e-mail: Markus.Stichel@goethe.de. Later this year, we will also offer teachers training on the classroom use of Kawin in Germany. The book will also go on tour with the Deutschmobil, and you can get free copies there.
