A discussion on how & why major international art events should count

During the summer of this year, a number of major international art events have taken place all over the world. In a debate with our audience, we would like to investigate how and why art events influence social and explore and discuss why they ought to be considered of such high significance. Please come along and join in this debate the Cho Why on October 1st, 2017.

With this event and in collaboration with Rai.D Collective, the Goethe-Institut Thailand would like to invite you to explore the art scene in Germany. Four Thai speakers will talk and exchange views of documenta 14 and other major art events of the year. The guest speakers are artists, experts and art critics who have personally been to the documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany and who would like share their experience and views on event. In view of the fact that Thailand be host to not one but three major biennale art events next year (the Bangkok Biennale, the Bangkok Art Biennial and the Thai Biennial), the speakers will also talk to audience about these upcoming events.
 
About the speakers:

Arin Rungjang is best known for his clever re-usage of historical material and the overlapping of major and minor narrative from different times, places, and language. His main interest lies in the lesser-known aspects of Thai history and their link to the present. His most recent exhibitions can be seen at the Documenta 14 in Athens-Kassel (2017), Mongkut - CAPC - Musée d'art contemporain (2015) and many other places.
 
Kamol Phaosavasdi is considered one of the forerunners of Thai conceptual installation and video art. His work has been exhibited in Asia, Australia, Europe and USA. In 2003, he participated in the 5th Venice Biennial in Italy. His work is situational and site-specific as he considers the interaction and participation of audience to be essential. He is current full-time professor at the Faculty of Fine Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
 
Thanom Chapakdee is an art critic and lecturer on art and cultural criticism at Department of Visual Arts and the Facult Fine Arts of Srinakharinwirot University. He has also written articles on art criticism weekly magazines. Thanom believes that criticism is also a form of artistic creation and it produces an artistic and create atmosphere and provokes renewed art activity.
 
Penwadee Nophaket Manont, presenter started her career in the art scene in 2001 as assistant curator of Project 304 in an alternative art space. From 2007 to 2012 she was part of the curatorial team at the Jim Thompson Art Centre. Currently Penwadee is an independent art curator. She works in the field of culture and is art activist. Recently she founded Rai.D Collective; a group of Thai curators and individuals who work in cultural activities. Her main concern is with the social political engagement between local, regional and international platforms.
