The German troops are within reach of Paris. Georg, a German refugee, manages to make a narrow escape to Marseille. In his bags, he carries the identity papers belonging to the German writer Weidel as well as confirmation of a visa to be granted to the latter by the Mexican embassy.  For Georg, Marseille is only a temporary stop. Only those who can prove that they are moving on, are allowed to stay. Georg thus decides to adopt Weidels identity. In the port, he mingles with the other refugees in the hope of getting a ticket to board a ship. But when Georg meets Marie, his plan begins to crumble. He falls in love with this mysterious woman who is looking for her missing husband ..... a writer.
