The Bangkok Music Society will give a concert with the name “Music of the Romantic Style” in the Goethe Saal of the Goethe-Institut Thailand on March 10th at 16:00.

The music chosen in this concert represents the main characteristics of choral music of the nineteenth century.  In that time, the majority of the Austrian and German composers were divided in their opinions. Some believed that the music should maintain or restore the old styles and forms of the past, and others believed that the music should look forward and create new paths and genres.

Mendelssohn's "Psalm 100", for example, represents the "old school" character.

One of the most significant movements in the choral music of the 19th century was that women were allowed to sing in worship. So, by 1850 women were singing in Protestant and Catholic choirs throughout Europe.

Fanny Hensel (Felix Mendelssohn's sister) and Clara Schumann, for example, were very good pianists and composers but they needed a lot of courage to show their musical talents.

Fanny Hensel´s most popular work is “Garden Songs” (Gartenlieder), published in 1846. Clara Schumann's piece “Evening celebration in Venice“(Abendfeier in Venedig) was composed as a birthday present for her husband. She sang it for him on his thirty-eighth birthday.

The Goethe-Institut Thailand is delighted to be presenting the Bangkok Music Society in the Goethe Saal.
