Set in the early 1900s in an Austrian boys’ boarding school, Young Törless tells the story of fascism in the making as a shy boy observes the sadistic behavior of his fellow students. Director Volker Schlöndorff adapted the film from the novel by Robert Musil and launched the New German Cinema movement with his searing analogy between the school and society at large. The film won 1966 Cannes Film Festival International Critics’ Prize.
