By Thanapol Virulhakul
60 Min.
Stuck in the state-enforced past and unable to see the future of his own country, Thanapol proposes ‘Thai postmodern dance’ as a way to navigate Thailand’s sociopolitical power structure that infiltrates all areas of a citizen’s life - and dance is not an exception.
With Champa Saenprom and Vidura Amranand, the pair whose impossible artistic encounter captivated the crowd at BIPAM2018, Thanapol crafts the inexistent dance movement in Thailand’s dance history where the traditional, the vernacular, and the contemporary meet, collide, interrupt, intersperse, and transform.
This production is a commissioned work from three SEA performing art platforms: BIPAM, Singapore International Festival of Arts, and George Town Festival.
About the Director
Since 2013, Thanapol Virulhakul has been co-artistic director of the Democrazy Theatre Studio in Bangkok. Past works include Hipster the King (2014), which received three awards from the Thai Centre of the International Association of Theatre Critics and toured Germany and Japan; Girl X (2015), a collaboration with Suguru Yamamoto from Hanchu Yuei (Japan); and Happy Hunting Ground (2016), a co-production with Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Germany).
He is still working on how the body in a work of art can create political tensions between people. He uses specific circumstances and models in various forms as a choreographic approach to challenge the personal mythology of spectators formed by different contexts and models embodied in everyday life.
