On the Road

Words, reflections, and encounters: Two German writers, Louise Kenn and Mücahit Türk, set out across the United States, meeting people from all walks of life and chronicling their encounters in an online travel blog. Through this remarkable journey, they hope to reimagine the transatlantic relationship for a new generation and strengthen the literary dialogue between Germany and the United States.

Across the American Southwest

From March 1 to April 4, 2026, two young writers from Germany, Louise Kenn and Mücahit Türk, will travel through the Southwest United States, from Las Vegas to New Orleans. Along the way, they will engage with diverse audiences through readings, discussions, and conversations at various venues: bookstores, schools, libraries, universities, companies, and even with host families.

At each stop of their road trip, the writers will share their experiences and reflections in the Goethe-Institut’s online magazine Gegenüber and on social media.

The journey begins in Las Vegas and continues through San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, and Phoenix before reaching New Orleans, then Houston, Austin, and Dallas. They conclude their travels in New York before returning to Germany.
At each location, the Goethe-Institut and its partners will organize readings, performances, roundtables, and other interactive formats. The two writers will present their own literary texts – published or in progress – in English translation and engage in dialogue with local audiences.

Travel notes on Gegenüber

Explore the voices of a new generation. The ON THE ROAD writing grows out of a space where close observation meets personal reflection, showing how literature evolves when one embraces unfamiliar landscapes, voices, and viewpoints. Follow their trip and read stories from on the road on GEGENÜBER, the digital magazine of the Goethe-Institut in North America.

Impressions from On the Road

In fall 2025, writers Sonali Beher and Iven Yorick Fenker set out on the first ON THE ROAD adventure. This gallery gathers the impressions and memories they collected from the East Coast to Texas.

UNTERWEGS is a project in cooperation with the German Literature Institute Leipzig and under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ulrike Draesner.
