Kanak, Niger

Wind erosion in areas cleared for agriculture increases the rate of desertification.

Students will watch the video on Kanak, Niger and read Station 3: Kanak of the Companion Reader below.

Students will:

1. Use Google Earth to develop a sense of place.
2. Use the data and information on the climograph in the Companion Reader to observe patterns in rainfall and temperature.
3. Read “How do You Stop the Desert? Niger May Have the Answer” (Grosfield, 2018).
4. Identify factors that influence climate.
5. Identify sources of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions.

Students will research how vegetation may mitigate desertification. They should explore what role vegetation plays in soil retention and in rainfall.
