Who determines the line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation? The documentary "Searching for Winnetou" by Ojibwe writer and filmmaker Drew Hayden Taylor invites the audience to explore the German fascination with the fictional Native American character Winnetou. Viewers are also asked to reflect on the controversial "reenactment" practices of German hobbyists. Taylor's work is more relevant than ever: over the summer, Winnetou films were pulled from government supported TV in Germany... and a new Winnetou film was released in theaters.
This screening is free and open to the public. Those wishing to learn more about this issue are encouraged to attend our Denken auf Deutsch meeting beforehand or consult the the list of resources which will be provided at the screening.
