The founder of the Vietnamese bamboo paper art talks about traditional values in the context of contemporary art. Guest of honour is the associate professor of the Vietnam Fine Arts University, Dr Nguyen Nghia Phuong.

In line with the exhibition Truc Chi – Listen To The River we talk with the artist Phan Hai Bang about bamboo paper art. Phan Hai Bang developed this new form of art and in 2012 founded the artists association Truc Chi Art („Nghệ Thuật Trúc Chỉ Việt Nam“) in Hue together with students of the Art Academy in Hue. Phan Hai Bang will explain the new term „Trucchigraphy“ („Đồ Họa Trúc Chỉ“) and show some examples.

Truc Chi combines the tradition of paper manufacturing with new techniques and creation processes. New values emerge from the old and the new and are discussed by Phan Hai Bang and Dr Nguyen Nghia Phuong, associate professor of the Vietnam Fine Arts University as well as with the audience.

Phan Hai Bang studied graphic arts in Hue and at the Hanoi University of Industrial Art. He completed his master’s degree in fine arts at Maha Sarakham, Thailand. Since 1996 he is an associate professor at the Art Academy Hue. His artworks have already been presented in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Truc Chi is his latest project which was shown 2015 in RedDoor in Ho Chi Minh City.
