Transformation of foreign language learning

The process of learning a foreign language is radically changing in this day and age. Language learning apps are catching on and superseding traditional approaches to foreign language learning. Meanwhile, translation apps and speech recognition software now raise a basic common-sense question: Why spend so much time systematically learning a language now that very rapid and practical alternative approaches are available. How will AI tools impact foreign language learning in future?

“Transformation of Foreign Language Learning” is a project of the Goethe-Institut in the Middle East and North Africa. The object is to take stock of the current situation and the outlook for the future in a series of talks by international specialists: Who or what will be the ideal future language teacher? And the ideal learning material? What new skills must a good teacher have? How and in which areas can artificial intelligence be used to support foreign language teaching and learning?

This symposium was held online from September to November 2022.
All the talks were recorded and can be accessed here.
